24 photographic posters in kiosks along Market Street
Commissioned by San Francisco Art Commission’s Market Street Art in Transit in the Millennium Program
To make room for expanded trade in the 1800’s deep sands were dredged in San Francisco Bay, pushing the city’s edge outward. These actions buried a rich network of ecosystems. The Ferry Building now stands on land expanded one half mile away form the original native shoreline. Deer, bear and raccoons roamed the marshes and mudflats . Dunes, reeds and tall grasses were the floor of this saltwater cove. Today’s Financial District was a haven of natural goods with shellfish and animals co-existing with native peoples.
In this collage series, I juxtaposed x-ray like images of the buried natural world with the signposts of work and life along Market Street. Time is shuffled with artifacts to include zippers and cloth, wrappers, tickets, and contemporary ephemera.

My intention is to tell of bodies changed To different forms: the gods who made the changes Will help me – or so I hope – with a poem That runs form the world’s beginning to our own days.
